OUT-OF-TOWN.

Spent the morning working in the gardens around Black Market. I found the opportunity to volunteer with a group dedicated to launching a Black owned grocery store in a part of my city that is a food desert. It was just me, my oldest son, and the owner/founder of Black Market most of the time. I hope to go again and work more in the big garden they are establishing.

Texas Ice Age Log, Day 5: Today was a great day!

I started looking for the needs around me. Our neighborhood has power. Many don’t have water due to pipe bursts and all the plumbers are booked solid. The boil notice was lifted around 12:30pm today.
Someone shared how desperately she wanted a shower, but how difficult it would be for her to leave to get one. It sparked an idea... how could we get a hot shower to her and others who might need one? A local store had four camp showers in stock, so I picked up two and set up a sign up schedule to keep me organized. I filled the bags with 5 gallons of hot water at my house and packed it in a soft-sided cooler. A couple of my friends in the neighborhood made a bunch of pasta to share. I’m telling you, nothing makes you feel more like a new person than a hot shower and a hot meal!
